About ACWWS

Assam Child and Women’s Welfare Society (ACWWS) was formerly known as the Indian Council for Child Welfare/ Assam State Branch (ICCW/ASB). The organization was renamed to ACWWS in 2023, as its activities were carried out independently, without direction or supervision from any other body or organization, including ICCW, New Delhi.

The need for a non-governmental organization working for the welfare of children and women, especially for the weaker sections of society, was recognized soon after India’s independence. The Indian Council for Child Welfare/ Assam State Branch (ICCW/ASB) is a registered non-governmental organization (NGO) that was established in 1967 in Shillong, the former capital of Assam. In 1972, when the capital was shifted to Dispur, the Council moved to Guwahati. Since its inception, the Council has been working towards its objective of providing welfare services to the children and women of Assam. The State Council implements its programs through 19 District Councils.

The Council provides shelter to abandoned, surrendered, or orphaned children, medical services, vocational training, and facilitates both in-country and inter-country adoption.
