Over the years, the Assam Child & Women’s Welfare Society (ACWWS) has undertaken numerous initiatives to support children, women, and vulnerable communities across Assam. This archive preserves the memory of our earlier projects, achievements, and milestones the foundation upon which our present programmes continue to grow.
Already Implemented Projects
The Assam Child and Women’s Welfare Society operates 22 district branches across Assam. Each branch carries out various programmes and activities focusing on child welfare, women’s empowerment, disability support, and community development in their respective districts.
Early Childhood Education Centre (ECEC)
Initiated in 1988The Early Childhood Education Centre (ECEC) programme was initiated by the Assam Child and Women’s Welfare Society in 1988 to provide a strong educational foundation for young children through structured early learning activities. A total of 31 ECECs were operated across Assam, promoting holistic development and school readiness. In 1998, the ECEC programme was merged with the Crèche for Working Mothers initiative to ensure integrated early childhood care and education.
Crèche for Working Mothers
Initiated in 1975The Crèche Programme was initiated by the Assam Child and Women’s Welfare Society in 1975 to support working mothers by providing safe and nurturing day care facilities for their children. Over the years, the organization successfully operated 385 crèches across 22 districts of Assam until 2022, ensuring early childhood care, nutrition, and developmental support for thousands of children.
Balsevika Training Institute
Established in 1973Two Balsevika Training Institutes were established by the Assam Child and Women’s Welfare Society at Rupnagar, Guwahati in the year 1973. The institutes aimed to train women as Balsevikas (childcare workers) to promote early childhood education and development across the state.
Anganwadi Training Centre (AWTC)
Initiated in 1979The Anganwadi Training Centre (AWTC) programme was started by the Assam Child and Women’s Welfare Society in 1979 to provide training for Anganwadi workers in early childhood care and education. The organization operated 9 AWTCs across 4 districts of Assam- Kamrup, Sonitpur, Sivasagar, and Dibrugarh equipping workers with skills to enhance child development and community outreach.
Learn to Live Camp (Summer camp for children)
1973The Learn to Live Camp was organized by the Assam Child and Women’s Welfare Society in the years 1973, 1974, and 1978. Children from different states participated in the camp, engaging in a variety of educational, cultural, and recreational activities that promoted learning, teamwork, and personal growth.
Pre-Primary Education Centre
1994It was run by the organization under the sponsorship of URULI-a Delhi based organization in the year 1994 and since 2005 it has been running by Department of Education ,Govt of Assam.
Integrated Scheme for Street Children
1995The organization started the project in the year1995 in four slam areas of Guwahati for the street children and provided no formal education, nutrition, vocational training and main stream the children through formal schooling. It was project under the Ministry of WCD, Govt. of India.
Reduce Maternal Mortality Rate
1999To Reduce Maternal Mortality Rate and Infant Mortality Rate in Rural Areas of Assam, sponsored by UNICEF. The project was implemented in four district of Assam namely, Kamrup, Nagaon, Jorhat and Goalpara. The project was started in the year 1999 and completed in the year 2000.Under this project untrained Dais of rural areas was upgraded to trained dais.
Deprived Urban Children Project under Sarba Shiksha Abhiyan
Initiated in 2003The Deprived Urban Children Project was launched by the Assam Child and Women’s Welfare Society in 2003 to support marginalized children in Guwahati city. The project focuses on ensuring access to education, basic facilities, and developmental opportunities for children from underprivileged urban communities under the framework of the Sarba Shiksha Abhiyan.
Psychosocial Couselling Support
2006Psychosocial Couselling Support for inmates of Jalukbari Children Homes for Girls, Observation Home, Boko, Children Home for Boys, Fatasil Ambari. The project was supported by UNICEF. The project was started in the 2006 and completed on 2010.
Targeted Intervention Programme
2007Targeted Intervention Programme on HIV/AIDS was run by the organization for the people of slum of Guwahati and it was started in the year 2007 and was completed on 2010.
Mother NGO project
since 2006The organization implemented the Mother NGO project to run RCH programme under NRHM since 2006 to 2011 in rural areas of Kamrup District.
Village Library Programme
year 2006Village Library Programme: The organization set up village library in rural area of Kamrup district under the sponsorship of TATA Trust in the year 2006.
Childline Programme for Children in Distress
initiated in 2016The Childline Programme is a 24-hour toll-free emergency service for children in distress. Assam Child and Women’s Welfare Society operated three Childline units from 2000 to 2023. Guwahati Childline (initiated in 2000), Railway Childline (initiated in 2015), and Kamrup Childline (initiated in 2016). The programme was financially supported by Childline India Foundation (CIF) under the Ministry of Women and Child Development, Government of India.
Open Shelter for Boys
Initiated in 2010The Open Shelter for Boys was started in 2010 to support children aged 6 to 18 years who are rag pickers, child labourers, beggars, small vendors, street performers, orphans, trafficked children, and runaways. The programme includes a Night Stay Facility for children placed under the care of the Child Welfare Committee and Day Care Centres located in Kalibarui, Noonmati, and Bamunimaidam. It provides shelter, nutrition, recreation, non-formal education, and developmental support in a safe and caring environment.

Case Study
Afsana Begum (named changed) was residing in Kalyani Niwas since 2015. She has her parents but relationship with her family members is not cordial as her parents gave her in adoption to a family when she was an infant as she is the fourth girl child born to her mother. But her adoptive mother died when Afsana is 10 years old. The adoptive father remarried after the death of his first wife but the lady used to tortured Afsana and that’s why the adoptive father returned Afsana to her Biological parents. She studied upto Class V when she was with her adoptive parents. Her biological parents and siblings didn’t love and care for her. She was abused physically and verbally by her siblings. Her biological father also never talked to her. They even didn’t admitted her in school. She was so exhausted that one day she had decided to ranaway from her home. She boarded a train from her home town and reached Guwahati. She was found by a concerned person and later handed her to Guwahati Childline. Afsana was kept in Kalyani Niwas for her care and protection. At first, She was not at all ready to stay here but after several counselling sessions she agreed to stay and continue her studies. Later, she was admitted in class V at Prachya Vidya Niketan. She has completed her Matriculation Exam in the year 2021 by securing Star marks i.e. 78.17% and Letter mark in “ Retail Management”. She has also completed HS Final Exam in the year 2023 by securing First Division i.e 67.6%. Afsana had received “SCOOTY” from Govt. of Assam for her excellent result in HS. She has also completed Beautician Training Course and Computer Basic Course under MDTC at Khadi and Village Industries Commission. She has also completed “Fashion Designing” & “ Bakery” training in the course of “Advanced Integrated Entrepreneurship Development Program” under National Small Industries Corporation Ltd. She is very active in co-curricular activities such as art & craft, Dance , Drama, Sports etc. She has participated in many competitions such as Quiz, Debate and Extempore speech etc. In the year 2023, she was engaged in vocational training in the trade “Front Office Associate” under “Tata Strive “ Presently , Afsana is engage as a Front Office Associate at “TAJ Chia Kutir Resort” Darjeeling. This is a very proud moment for our organisation that Afsana has brought for us.
Arju (name change) was an abandoned child and she was about one year old when she came to shishuGreh on 13th February, 2017.At the time of admissionher weight was3.7 kg only and was severely malnourished (Grade III PEM) with delayed developmental milestone. She was not able to sit with or without support at the age of one year. Anju was provided regular physiotherapy and speech therapy at Home and at Shishu- Sarathi – a centre for multiple disabilities.As per advised of physiotherapist, she was provided with AFO with medical arch support and lateral straight border and Knee Gaiters for maintaining knee extension .After providing regular therapy and AFO and Gaiters, she was able to walk without supportand was able to speak in bisyllableuntil she was placed in adoption .She could ride tricycle with little helpand was active and playful child. She could identify and call names of the caretakers and of other children. Anju always liked to go to crèche which wassituated inside the Shishu-Greh campus. Anju was placed in Inter-country adoption and happily left for Italy with her adoptive parents on 14thJune 2019.
